• Definition

Chondroitin sulfate is a molecule present in the connective tissues of vertebrates (cartilage, arteries, skin) matrix. It is a proteoglycan, basic unit formed by N-acetyl-galactosamine and glucuronic acid. There is a β (1-4) linkage between dissacarídeas units and a β (1-3) linkage between the uronic acid and galactosamine.

There are two main types of chondroitin sulfates, which depend on the position of the sulfate group in Galactosamine:

• Application

The main application of Chondroitin Sulfate is treating osteoartite, a degenerative joint disease that affects humans and animals in old age. The proteoglycan aggregate action of regulation of functions in cartilage calcification which inhibits the crystallization of calcium phosphate, providing cartilage with strength and elasticity. Has properties of pain relief and cartilage regenerative activities.

The Chondroitin Sulfate promotes an increase in the number of fibroblasts and stimulation of collagen synthesis. When applied to the skin, retains water, forming a moisturizing and protective film capable of maintaining the level of hydration of the epidermis and reduce water loss by evaporation.
